History

Banfi was founded in 1978 by two Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani; from the outset, the two planned to create a very large production structure which was however able to balance the quantity with the quality of the wines produced, through cellars and cutting-edge tools. The collaboration with the oenologist Ezio Rivella, one of the most renowned professionals in the sector in Italy, will also be fundamental. Also in those years, Banfi took over the historic Piedmontese winery Bruzzone, active since 1860 and transforming it into Banfi Piemonte with a view to producing quality classic method sparkling wines.

Production method

The harvest takes place rigorously by hand and in crates when the grapes reach optimal ripeness. The fermentation and maceration of the grapes takes place in steel at a controlled temperature for a few weeks. For the refinement of the wine obtained, however, large 60-90 hl barrels of 40% French oak and 60% French oak barriques are used; the wine stays in wood for 2 years and then for 12 months in the bottle before being placed on the market.

Tasting notes

Ruby red color with intense garnet hues. On the nose notes of very ripe fruit and jams, such as plum and blackberry jam, black cherries in alcohol and dried violets, with also hints of balsamic and sweet spices such as tobacco, cloves, black pepper and toasting. On the palate the wine is soft, rich and of great structure, counterbalanced by very balanced acidity and elegant tannins on the finish; the sip is long and pleasant.

Possible combinations

Brunello “Poggio alle Mura” by Banfi is a great, powerful and mature Tuscan red wine, suitable as a meditation wine, capable of expressing itself at its best even after many years in the bottle. It is typically recommended on savory and spicy red meat dishes or game such as stews, stewed wild boar or venison, braised meat, roasts, roast duck or chicken livers.
