History
The Mazzei family has been producing wine since the eleventh century in Tuscany. Ser Lapo Mazzei is in fact known for having been the first to draw up a document in 1398 for the denomination of “Chianti”; subsequently, in 1435, his niece Madonna Smeralda Mazzei marries Piero Agnolo da Fonterutoli and thanks to the union, the Castle becomes part of the family heritage. Today the family has even reached the 24th generation of winemakers. Another key figure in the history of the family is Filippo “Philip” Mazzei, a close friend of Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin among others. Today the company is led by Lapo Mazzei, Cavaliere del Lavoro and president of the Chianti Classico Consortium for over 20 years, and his sons Filippo and Francesco.

Production method
The grapes come from the Siepi farm, owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, a farm cultivated according to standards of sustainability and respect for nature in a particularly suitable position and with a special microclimate. At the beginning of the 1980s, the brilliant intuition of combining merlot with sangiovese proved to be successful. The grapes are harvested by hand and selected at different times depending on the variety; usually the merlot ripens earlier and the sangiovese is expected in the middle/end of September. The two varieties are vinified separately in stainless steel at a controlled temperature; the wine obtained then ages in French oak barriques for 18 months and for another 4 months in concrete tanks in which the blend is created. A period of rest in the bottle follows before being placed on the market.

Tasting notes
Ruby red color with garnet hues. On the nose, an elegant explosion of aromas of tobacco spices, sandalwood, toasted coffee and vanilla, with hints of small ripe red fruits, black cherries in alcohol and plum, dried flowers, herbaceous and mineral. Crunchy, soft, balanced and of good substance on the palate with equally balanced acidity, ripe and fine tannins and a long and persistent finish.
Possible combinations
Mazzei Siepi is a great Supertuscan that contrasts the substance and roughness of Sangiovese with the softness and elegance of Merlot. A great pedigree wine, it is ideal as a meditation wine for a large drink alone or in the company of special people. In combination it is ideal with rich and tasty dishes based on meat or game such as roasts, stews, stews, etc. or with platters of aged cheeses.
